How We Dropped Our Cable Bill Nearly $100 per Month and What We Do Instead
Let me start by telling you that we were paying $122 per month for Dish Network. We were paying for two TVs, but only using one because we’d removed the TV from our bedroom. When I looked through our bills, this seemed like a logical place to start cutting.
I called around and was able to score a DirecTV package for $35 a month for two years. This isn’t a package that is always available, but runs often in our area. In two years when the prices go up, I plan to call and haggle a good deal again.
Obviously your area may be a bit different and have different packages available, but it is definitely worth calling to see what they can do for you. When I called to cancel our Dish Network, they also offered me a small package for as little as $12 per month for 12 months, but I’d already signed a contract with DirecTV. It’s definitely worth making a call to local cable companies in your area and seeing what they can do for you.
We also purchased a Fire TV Stick at that time. We were already paying for Netflix and Hulu (both can be used with the Fire TV Stick if you don’t have a Smart TV like us), each of which have packages starting around $10 per month. If you want to start with only one of these, my opinion is that Hulu is better for series and reality TV shows, while Netflix is better for movies and kids.
I know you’ve probably read the information above, more times than you can count, but here is what we do that is just a little different. We love Disney Junior, Discovery, and Food Network. All of these stations have apps that can be downloaded for free on the Fire TV Stick. Once they are downloaded, you can watch almost any show at any time by using your satellite provider login information. The same exact login and password you use when paying your bill. At that point you can watch the station live or watch shows that have previously aired.
Honestly, though we use our DirecTV login and still have to pay each month for that. We rarely even cut our satellite box on. We dropped our $122 a month payment to a $35 dollar a month payment saving $87 per month and over $1000 per year while still enjoying our favorite shows at our own pace.
